TOOTH WHITENING
Modern whitening systems offer a safe and effective solution for those people unhappy with the colour of their teeth. Unlike some centres offering one-size fits all treatments the Abingdon practice employs a complete range of whitening systems to suit every individual’s situation.
The practice has provided tooth whitening for many years now and has recently conducted a review of the numerous techniques offered.
- Our findings were that the instant 'in surgery', 'power' and 'laser' bleaching techniques all rely on a strong concentration of a form of hydrogen peroxide
- The gel on its own will do the job, in most cases it will be used for a period of up to an hour, in the practice
- The 'activating system' be it light, 'laser' (they're not!), or ultrasonic vibration, do not really influence the whitening effect. They are just there to impress the patient!
- The gels used must be contained in a well fitting, accurately constructed tray, (like a thin gum shield) and this should protect the gums from the effects of the gel. The same trays can be used with lower strength gels in the 'home bleach', which produces the same result but over a longer period of time - about 10-14 days on average. The stronger gels can produce sensitivity in the teeth and this varies unpredictably from patient to patient.
- With the strong ‘power bleach’ there will be some 'rebound' i.e. lessening of the effect the next day, again this varies unpredictably.
- The 'rebound' effect is less with the home bleach.
- The best results are obtained by a combination of the two, but ideally this should be home bleach first followed by a session in the practice. This is known now as 'deep bleaching.
